PHILADELPHIA – The Penn men’s squash team was victorious Wednesday night against Drexel in its first-ever visit to the Kline and Specter Squash Center, 6-3.
The Quakers (2-1) are now 2-0 all-time against Drexel (1-3), having defeated them 9-0 on Nov. 30 of last year. Head coach Jack Wyant felt the his team turned in a good performance, but still has a few things its needs to improve on.
“We gritted out a tough victory against an ambitious and game Drexel squad,” Wyant said. “We need to play better if we expect to leave Williamstown with two victories Friday night.”
Penn had its hands full with a young Drexel quad, clinching the victory in the final two matches of the night. Senior captain Danny Greenberg led his team at No. 1 and notched his first win of the season in straight sets over Ibrahim Bakir. The Quakers dug themselves into a bit of a hole as Derek Chilvers, Augie Frank, and John Dudzik – Penn’s No. 2-4 players – all fell to their opposing Dragons, with Chilvers the only one to win a set.
Other than that, it was all Red and Blue as the back end of Penn’s lineup played near-flawless – the Quakers No. 5-9 players would lose just two sets the rest of the night. Freshman Liam Quinn was Penn’s No. 5 on the night and he defeated Mark Lindsay in four sets for his first collegiate victory to seal the win for the Quakers.
The men will hit the road again on Friday at Williams in Williamstown, Mass. with the action beginning at 4:30 p.m. Next, the men will host their first home match of the season when Navy visits the Ringe Squash Courts on Dec. 6 at 5 p.m.
