PHILADELPHIA – For the first time in Penn squash history, both the men’s and women’s teams have defeated Princeton in the same year.

The regular season sweep was sealed Wednesday night, by the third-ranked University of Pennsylvania women’s squash team, with a 6-3 victory over the fourth-ranked Tigers.

Both the Penn men’s and women’s victories against Princeton (5-2, 1-2 Ivy) are a first for the Quaker squash program. Before this week, the men’s team last victory against the Tigers had come on Feb. 13, 1974, winning 5-4. The women’s squash team, in its first year of varsity play in 1974, was defeated by Princeton, 10-1 and 9-0 that season, thus making the 2014 season the first Penn sweep of the Tigers in the regular season.

The Penn women (6-2, 2-1 Ivy) were led by Anaka Alankamony, Yan Xin Tan and Haidi Lala at the top of the ladder, along with individually undefeated Chloe Blacker at the bottom of the ladder, but the clinching win came from the seventh position, in Carey Celata.

Celata has quietly played well all season, coming into the match against Princeton with a 5-2 individual record. The sophomore came up big when it counted, winning 3-1, in what she described as her biggest match to date.

The Quakers earned their sixth and final point, in a grueling five game victory for Camille Lanier.

The Penn women’s team will look to carry the momentum it gained in the Ivy race to Saturday, when the Quakers take on No. 5 Yale at 1 p.m., in Ringe Courts.
