Boston, Mass. - The Quakers won four of their six matches by at least ten on Sunday at the Eric Sollee Invitational to improve to 15-2 on the season.
Penn was led by strong performances within all three weapons. Freshman Michael Mills finished 12-2 in sabre and sophomore Evan Prochniak won 11 bouts. Freshmen Clifford Fishler and Joseph Isaac each won nine bouts in epee while junior Zane Grodman went 10-3 in foil.
In the first match of the day, the Red and Blue took care of Brandeis, 19-8. Penn won epee by a 5-4 margin and was victorious in foil and sabre by matching 7-2 scores. Mills and Prochniak both went 3-0 in sabre while junior Zane Grodman was a perfect 3-0 in foil.
The Quakers fell to second-ranked Harvard in their next match, 16-11. Sabre came away with the lone victory, winning 5-4 - courtesy of Mills' and Prochniak's matching 2-1 records. Penn dropped both foil and epee 6-3.
The Red and Blue rebounded, taking their match with MIT by a 19-8 margin. Freshman Alex Guo led sabre to a 7-2 victory with his three bout wins and Dan Shiff went 2-0 as foil wont 6-3. Epee pulled out a 5-4 victory as four different fencers secured a bout win.
Penn was even more impressive versus NYU, as a 9-0 performance in sabre led the team to a 20-7 win. Freshman Josh Hammond, Mills and Prochniak were all unbeaten in sabre while Grodman matched them in foil. Foilists took six of nine bouts and epee won five bouts, with two coming from Isaac.
Boston College made it close in the Quakers' fifth match, but ultimately went down 15-12. Epee and sabre won by matching 6-3 scores while foil lost 6-3. Sophomore Steve Jow went 2-0 in epee and freshman Elliot Tusk matched him in sabre. In foil, three different fencers won a bout.
In Penn's final match of the day, the team took care of business against Ivy foe Brown, beating the Bears 20-7. Fishler and senior Jacob Wischnia both went 3-0 as epee won 7-2. Sabre also won 7-2 as Mills was 3-0 and foil finished ahead 5-4 behind a pair of victories from R.J. Shipp.
The Quakers hope to build on the success they had this past weekend as they fence at the Ivy League Championships this coming Saturday and Sunday.
