PHILADELPHIA
- For the fourth consecutive year, the Penn men's fencing team will officially open its season within the confines of Hutchinson Gym, bringing in seven other schools to compete in the 2012 version of the Philadelphia Invitational.

Ranked #7 in the first USFCA poll of the season, Penn faces two other schools ranked in the Top Ten among its six opponents on Sunday. At 9 a.m., the Quakers will put its ranking on the line against the #9 Sacred Heart Pioneers. A 10:15 bout against the Tar Heels of North Carolina and an 11:30 date with NJIT wrap up the morning session.

The Quakers return to the strips at 1:30 p.m., squaring off with local rival Haverford before taking on the Blue Devils at 2:45. The Red and Blue end the day with Johns Hopkins at 4 p.m.

Penn went 6-0 at last year's Philadelphia Invitational and will have return engagements with five of those squads again this year. Johns Hopkins takes the place of Drew on the docket for this season.

The return of senior First Team All-American Evan Prochniak --who led Penn with 40 victories last season -- as well as sophomores Josh Hammond and Michael Mills, make sabre the undeniable strength of this year's team.

Senior Zane Grodman captured 31 wins a season ago while Vidur Kapur ended his season as an Honorable Mention All-American in foil.

In epee, Clifford Fishler had a spectacular freshman campaign, wrapping up his year with 37 wins against only 17 defeats.

The Philadelphia Invitational is the start of an extremely busy time for the fencing team, who compete for four consecutive weekends, culminating in the Ivy Championships on Feb. 11-12.
