PHILADELPHIA - With the #7 Penn men's fencing team off to an 11-0 start, national honors are sure to follow. The benefactor this week is junior Evan Prochniak, who scored the winning point for the Quakers in their 14-13 win over #1 Penn State on Saturday in State College. Prochniak follows Clifford Fishler in being recognized by CollegeFencing360.com and is their National Fencer of the Week for January 31.

Penn opened Saturday with a tidy 23-4 flossing of Drew. Prochniak warmed up with a 3-0 record in that match. Next up were the Nittany Lions. Thanks in large part to a 6-3 advantage at epee, Penn stood toe-to-toe with the top-ranked team in the country throughout, setting the stage for the Quaker All-American to fence a PSU freshman in sabre to decide the outcome. While his match didn't produce quite as much drama as Fishler's a week ago, Prochniak's 5-2 win over Sean Moran secured the victory and allowed the team's undefeated record to live on for at least another week.

Despite taking one loss to Penn State, Prochniak went undefeated the rest of the way and ended at 9-1 on the day, raising his overall record to a lofty 16-2 on the season as the team preps for this weekend's Eric Sollee Invitational, hosted by Brandeis.
