State College, Pa. - Though the Penn men's fencing team wasn't able to get the win it most wanted on Saturday, the team still performed well in gaining victories in three of four bouts at the Penn State Invitational.

The day's opener was against the Duke Blue Devils and it things could have started off on the wrong foot if not for the foil team. An 8-1 edge in that weapon group erased 5-4 and 6-3 losses in saber and epee, giving Penn the 15-12 win. Jason Chang and Adam Elkassas each went a perfect 3-0 against the Blue Devils. The Quakers had little trouble in their second bout, posting convincing wins in all three weapons to slide past North Carolina, 20-7. Ayyub Ibrahim, Evan Prochniak, Ira Schlosberg and Steven Yang each were undefeated against the Tar Heels while posting at least two wins.

Though foil was the key for the win against Duke, they fell prey to national power Penn State in the last bout of the morning session. Penn's foilists could post only one point against the Nittany Lions, and 6-3 losses in both epee and saber ensured that the Red and Blue would not be able to complete the comeback, coming up short against the host school, 20-7.

Penn's lone bout of the afternoon session came against Haverford, with the Quakers gaining a 22-5 win over the Fords. Saber and epee each supplied 8-1 wins to help the Red and Blue knock off their Philadelphia neighbors. Clifford Fishler, Steven Jow, Sean Turner and Yang each went 3-0 in the matchup against the Fords.

The Quakers return to action in two weeks with the Philadelphia Invitational. This year's event will be held at Temple's Student Pavilion on Jan. 26. In addition to rematches with Haverford and Duke, Penn will stare down Sacred Heart, NJIT, Drew and Johns Hopkins.
