Princeton, N.J. - The Quakers went 3-1 on Sunday at Princeton to finish the Ivy League Championships with a 3-3 record and place fourth overall.
Penn won its first three matches on the day to finish at .500 or better for the second consecutive year and finished with a 3-3 record overall. Princeton won the title for the second straight year while Columbia (5-1) and Harvard (4-2) both finished ahead of the Quakers.
Senior Stephanie Wheeler was the top fencer for the Red and Blue, earning first-team All-Ivy honors in epee after finishing the two-day event with a 14-4 record. She is the Quakers' first first-team selection since 2008 and the first epee fencer to earn the honor since 2004.
Sophomore Amrit Bhinder also fenced well in epee, helping the Red and Blue to a perfect 6-0 record. She was named to the All-Ivy second-team for her performance and was one of three second-team performers for the Quakers. Senior Danielle Kamis and junior Dominika Franciszkowicz were also named to the second team, the third All-Ivy nod for each of them. Franciszkowicz went 14-4 overall while Kamis finished 13-5.
In the first round of action on Sunday, Penn took care of Yale 18-9 by winning all three weapons. Sabre won seven bouts while foil won six and epee took five. Kamis went 3-0 in sabre and Wheeler matched her in epee.
The Quakers won their second straight match, taking down Brown 16-11. Senior Diana Ark, who switched from epee to sabre mid-season, went 2-1 in sabre while Kamis was 3-0. Freshman Gabby Foor also did well, going 2-1 in epee.
The Red and Blue moved over .500 with a tight 14-13 victory over Cornell. Penn lost foil 8-1 but won sabre 7-2 and epee 6-3. Franciszkowicz and Wheeler both went 3-0 in their respective weapon, and Bhinder was 2-1 in epee.
Facing Princeton in their final match, the Quakers won five bouts in epee, but combined for just five in foil and sabre as they lost 17-10. Franciszkowicz, junior Laura Paragano, Bhinder and Wheeler all went 2-1 versus the Tigers.
Penn returns to the strips for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals, Saturday Mar. 12.
