STATE COLLEGE, PA. - Facing two Top Ten opponents to open the Penn State Invitational, the Penn women's fencing team didn't have the luxury of easing into the competition on Saturday. Two competitive losses put the Quakers into a little bit of an early funk, but the team recovered with three consecutive wins, putting the team at 7-3 on the season.

The morning began with the #9 Quakers taking on #8 Temple. Luona Wang and Amrit Bhinder each provided Penn with 3-0 marks in the match, but the Red and Blue could not overcome a 6-3 deficit in sabre as the Owls took the match, 14-13.

Next up was #1 Penn State. Foil was once again strong as Wang and Wendy Zhao both went 2-1 in their three bouts, but the Nittany Lions used a 7-2 edge in sabre to cut down Penn, 16-11.

The team rallied with a 15-12 win over North Carolina. Sarah Parmacek went 3-0 and both Wang and Zhao were 2-0 as foil ran up a perfect 9-0 mark against the Tar Heels on the way to the victory. A 22-5 win against Haverford allowed the Red and Blue to then even their record on the day, sabre providing a lift with an 8-1 win over the Fords.

The day's final bout provided Penn with one last chance to take down a Top Ten opponent, and this time they took advantage. Facing #10 Duke, the Quakers ended the meet on a high note with a 15-12 win. Foil was again the key as Parmacek and Wang turned in 3-0 records as part of a 7-2 edge in that particular weapon. In addition, Bhinder, Lisa Dawes and Gabby Foor all went 2-1 in epee.

Penn returns to action next weekend at the Eric Sollee Invitational. Other teams competing at the event include Brandeis, Haverford, Hunter, Johns Hopkins and NYU.
