Waltham, Mass. - The Penn women's fencing team had little problem dispatching the competition for much of the day at the Eric Sollee Invitational, tested only in a 14-13 loss to Boston College that kept them from a perfect record on Saturday.

The morning session opened with Penn taking on Brandeis, the host of the event. The Judges were especially hospitable to Dominika Franciszkowicz, Lisa Dawes and Gabby Foor, as all three went 3-0, leading Penn to a 22-5 win out of the gates.

MIT provided much more of a challenge as sabre and epee left the two teams tied at 9-9, however a massive 9-0 showing from foil pushed the Quakers over the top, 18-9, keeping the Red and Blue on the right track going into the afternoon.

Facing NYU in the first bout of the afternoon session, sabre gave one of its more inspired performances on the young season, reeling off seven wins in a row en route to an 8-1 advantage in that weapon. Laura Paragano was nearly unscored upon while racking up a 3-0 mark versus the Violets. Another 8-1 edge, this time at epee, secured a 22-5 win.

Boston College tagged Penn with its only loss of the day. Despite perfect records from Rachel Chin and Wendy Zhao (3-0 and 2-0, respectively) in foil, the Quakers only recorded a combined five points from sabre and epee, falling 14-13 to drop them to 3-1 on the day.

A change in schedule had Penn squaring off with Tufts rather than Brown in the finale. Looking for redemption, sabre rattled off the final three points to win going away, 6-3, and epee followed suit, winning the last six on their way to a 7-2 advantage. Combined with another perfect 9-0 score from foil, the Quakers had little trouble with the Jumbos, ending the meet on a high note, 22-5.

The Ivy Championships, hosted by Yale, are next on the agenda for Penn. The two-day event begins next Saturday, February 11, and concludes on Sunday.
