CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The No. 10 Penn women's fencing team had a tough task ahead of it on the first day of the Ivy League Round-Robins, and finds itself in a tie for fourth place after losses to No. 2 Princeton and No. 3 Columbia on Saturday at Harvard's Albert H. Gordon Track.

Penn defeated Yale in its first bout of the day, 18-9, taking each weapon group but grabbing hold of the proceedings largely on the strength of the foil team, which won 7-2. Luona Wang and Wendy Zhao each were 3-0 for the Quakers against the Bulldogs in foil, while Laura Barger and Tiffany Chan (sabre) and the trio of Srey Beaulac, Amrit Bhinder and Gabby Foor (epee) all had two wins apiece.

The sabre squad had the best showing in a 19-8 loss to Columbia, but even they were knocked off, 5-4. Barger again had two wins for the Quakers. In foil, Sarah Parmacek opened with a win, but the Lions came back with four straight before Wang could stop the streak. Columbia then closed with three more points for the 7-2 victory. In epee, Beaulac provided two wins but that was all the team managed.

Things got worse to close the day, as Princeton dominated the team in a 23-4 defeat. Foil and epee each scored two points, while sabre was shut out. Foor had both of the team's wins in epee, while Wang and Rachel Chin had one victory apiece in foil.

After the first day, Wang has the best overall record on the team at 5-4, while Foor leads epee at 4-4 and Barger tops sabre at 4-5. Penn meets Cornell, Brown and Harvard to close out action tomorrow, beginning at 10 a.m.

Standings After Day One
