Ivy League Round-Robins Championship Central
CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The No. 10 Penn women's fencing team fell in three bouts on Sunday, including a pair by 14-13 margins. The Quakers wrapped up the Ivy League Round-Robins at 1-5, finishing sixth overall. The day began with a 14-13 loss to Cornell in the 10 a.m. bout. Each weapon was decided by a 5-4 score, but only the Penn foil team was victorious. Sarah Parmacek was 3-0 for foil, while Luona Wang added two wins. Tiffany Chan (3-0 in sabre) and Amrit Bhinder (3-0 in epee) joined Parmacek in going undefeated against the Big Red, but neither received enough help from the other squad members. The frustration continued as Brown was able to claim a 14-13 triumph before the lunch break. Though epee and foil each won their individual matchups, a 7-2 deficit in sabre proved too much to overcome. Bhinder was once again 3-0 in helping epee to a 6-3 decision over the Bears. In the team's final bout of the Round-Robins, Harvard was able to down Penn by a score of 16-11. Foil posted a 6-3 win against the Crimson, receiving two victories apiece from Parmacek, Wang and Rachel Chin. Wang ended the weekend with Penn's best overall record, going 11-7. Bhinder was right behind her at 10-8, while Chan and Parmacek - who made a big recovery after starting 2-7 - each ended at 9-9. The Quakers return to action next weekend at the NCAA Regionals, hosted by Lafayette College on March 9 from the Kirby Sports Center. Penn will have the opportunity to qualify as many as six women for the NCAA Championships later this month in San Antonio. |
