PHILADELPHIA - The 2010 Penn field hockey season was a learning experience for all involved, starting with head coach Colleen Fink and her staff. The Quakers' first-year coach was literally in her first season with the team, having been hired after spring practices were completed.
As a result, the results may not have been to anyone's liking on the field in 2010, but the steps are being put in place to rebuild this once-powerful program and return it to the top of the Ivy League standings. Coach Fink and her staff will use this offseason, especially. to learn about their players and figure out how to get the most from them.
Highlights from 2010? There was the 1-0 win at William & Mary in just the second game of the season. And who can forget the back-to-back overtime wins at Franklin Field late in the campaign, the first against Columbia and the second against Saint Joseph's? Both of them were dramatic affairs that ended in Penn's favor.
The Quakers lose two seniors from the team, co-captains Annie Matthews and Laurel McGarvie. McGarvie was an All-Ivy selection this season for the second year in a row. So the good news is that plenty of players return. The question is what building blocks they will provide going forward.
