PHILADELPHIA - Mandy Epstein and Julie Tahan have recently been selected as field hockey captains for the upcoming 2012 season. Both players played in every game during the past two seasons and started every game during the 2011 season. They are each one of five returning players to start all 17 games last season.
Epstein will be entering her senior season this upcoming fall. In addition to starting every game this season, she played the entire duration in 15 of those contests. In total, she played all but 14 minutes of the entire season. Epstein has now started 33 consecutive games for the Quakers. She was one of just 11 Ivy League defenders to record multiple defensive saves, finishing tied for seventh overall in the league.
Tahan will be the other co-captain despite entering only her junior season in the fall of 2012. She has played in every game during her Penn career, starting all but two. This past season, she led the Quakers in every offensive category, including goals (6), assists (8), points (20), shots (67), and shots on goal (40). She recorded at least one point in 11 of Penn's 17 games. Two seasons ago, Tahan tied for the team lead in goals as freshman and was named the Gail Lipstein Award winner for outstanding freshman. Her older sister, Kelsey, was also a captain for the Penn field hockey team during the 2009 season.
In addition to Epstein and Tahan, the Quakers will return 11 letterwinners in 2012, each of whom started at least one game this past season.
