PHILADELPHIA - Three members of the Penn field hockey team have recently been selected to train at USA Field Hockey's Performance Training Centers. A Darien, Conn. native, Alex Iqbal will be training at the North Regional High Performance Center. MaryRose Croddick and Julie Tahan will be training at the Pennsylvania Regional High Performance Center. These three players are currently in training during the month of May and will compete at the Women's National Championships (June 1-8) if they are selected to their respective regional travel squad.
Iqbal, who will be entering her sophomore season in the fall of 2012, was named second-team All-Ivy during her first year at Penn. Her regional training practices will alternate between the University of Massachusetts and the University of Connecticut. She finished her freshman campaign with 12 points, the most by a freshman season the 1983 season. She recorded a hat trick against Appalachian State and scored twice, including the game-winning goal, at Brown.
For Tahan and Croddick, representing the Pennsylvania squad, their regional training center will be a short trip to Drexel. Tahan will be entering her junior season this fall. She was also recently announced as one of the team's two captains for the upcoming 2012 season. Last year, Tahan led the team in goals (6), assists (8), points (20), shots (67), and shots on goal (40). She recorded a point in 11 of Penn's 17 games last season.
Croddick, who is entering her sophomore season in 2012, was named honorable mention All-Ivy last season, anchoring a defensive line that allowed 20 fewer goals than it had the previous season. She and Iqbal were both named the Gail Lipstein Outstanding freshmen at the team's banquet after becoming the first freshmen in progam history to earn All-Ivy honors in the same season. Croddick was the only player to play every minute on the field for Penn this season and made defensive saves in the wins over Cornell and Appalachian State.
