PHILADELPHIA - Two current University of Pennsylvania field hockey players, Elizabeth Hitti and Alex Iqbal, took part in the USA Field Hockey 2014 Under 21 Championships this week. The event started on June 21 and concluded on June 25 at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa.
Hitti and Iqbal were among 72 women invited to the second annual Under 21 Championships based on their play with the New England and New Jersey High Performance training squads, respectively. (Another Penn player, MaryRose Croddick, was on the Pennsylvania High Performance team.)
These 72 athletes were playing for a highly coveted spot at this year’s Junior National Camp in the hopes to be selected to one of USA Field Hockey’s 2014-15 Junior National Teams.
At the Championships, the women were split into four teams, with Hitti playing on the Red team and Iqbal on the White squad. The teams held practices on June 21, then began round-robin game action on June 22 and continued it through June 24. On June 25, the bottom two teams in the standings played a third-place game, followed by the top two teams which played a championship match.
At the same time that the U21 Championships were happening, 68 top high school athletes were also at Spooky Nook Sports competing in the Futures Elite Championship. Two incoming Penn players, Madison Hendry and Jasmine Li, participated in the Futures Elite event, Hendry with the Courage team and Li with the Freedom team.
In the U21 Championship, Hitti’s Red team went 2-1 in round-robin play before losing in the championship game, while Iqbal’s White team went 1-2 in round-robin play and then won the third-place game.
In the Futures Elite Championship, Hendry’s Courage team went 1-1-1 in round-robin play and then won the title match, while Li’s Freedom team went 0-2-1 and then lost in the third-place game.
