On a beautiful day for racing, Penn started its 2012 portion of the heavyweight rowing season with a close battle against Georgetown. The Quakers won three of the four races held on the day, but the lone loss was ith the varsity eight.

The varsity race was close throughout, but the Hoyas pulled away for a 3.5-seconds win. Georgetown's boat crossed first in a time of 6:18/4 to 6:21.9 for the Quakers.

Despite the loss in the varsity race, Penn has some momentum on its side heading into a pair of Cup races on Saturday. The second varsity was dominant against the Hoyas, eclipsing Georgetown's 2V by more than 34 seconds. The Red and Blue crossed in 6:33.2 while the Hoyas lagged behind in a time of 6:57.6.

The frosh eights took to the Cooper River in their first dual races as collegians and acclimated themsevles well with a pair of wins. The first frosh eights started the day off well for the Quakers, besting the Hoyas by nearly 13 seconds, 6:35.8 to 6:48.7. The 2F had a 10.5-second win in its first race together of the spring, crossing in 7:11.0 to Georgetown's 7:21.5.

There is little downtime for Penn on the weekend as the Quakers head back to the Cooper River tomorrow for two annual Cup races. Up first is the Burk Cup with Northeastern starting at 9 a.m. followed by the McCausland Cup with George Washington at 1 p.m. The Red and Blue won both races in 2011 and enter looking to retain the hardware currently displayed on Boathouse Row.
