IRA Results

CHERRY HILL, N.J. -
Competing in the national semifinals for the first time since 2006, Penn's heavyweight varsity eight finished sixth in its heat and moved on to Saturday's Petite Final. The second varsity, also competing in Friday's semifinals at the 2012 IRA Championships, was fifth in its semifinal heat.

It was a windy and overcast day on the Cooper River. The second varsity and varsity heats were pushed back nearly two hours due to weather.

The varsity matched up against the No. 2 (Brown) and No. 3 seed (Harvard) in the first heat of the semifinals as well as No. 6 Princeton, No. 8 Syracuse and No. 13 Cornell. The Quakers entered the regatta as the No. 14 seed. Brown was the clear winner at 6:17.211 and was followed by Harvard. Syracuse edged Princeton for the final advancing spot in the IRA Grand Final. Penn was about eight seconds behind Cornell and finished in 6:40.134.

The Quakers will participate in the Petite Final on Saturday morning and are guaranteed at least a 12th-place finish overall - something the Red and Blue have accomplished just twice in the last decade.

Prior to the varsity heat, the second varsity was in one of the most competitive heats of the day. There was just a seven-second difference between the top five boats in the semifinal. Cal, Wisconsin and Brown earned the Grand Final spots, while Cornell and Penn finished just a few seats back. The Quakers were just a half second behind the Big Red with a finish of 6:26.891 - which was also just three seconds behind Brown's Grand Final qualifying time.

In the Open Fours, Penn was fourth in its heat and eighth overall with a time of 7:39.174. In their heat, the Quakers fell behind a trio of Ivies in Harvard, Brown and Cornell, but topped Drexel by 11 seconds.

The second varsity will compete first on for Penn on Saturday. Its Petite Final begins at 10:30 a.m., while the varsity race is slated for 11:30 a.m.
