Heavyweight Rowing Claims McCausland Cup over George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On a cold, but sunny and relatively even-watered day on the Potomac River Saturday, Penn started its 2011 heavyweight rowing season by winning the McCausland Cup from George Washington

Penn won three of four races contested on the beautiful Potomac  in the nation's capital, finishing first in both varsity eight races and splitting a pair of novice races.

The win is the first in the McCausland Cup for the Quakers since the 2007 season when the Red and Blue defeated the Colonials by three seconds.

Greg Myhr's squad was able to load the McCausland Cup on the convoy back up I-95 to Philadelphia after a win in the Varsity Eigh by seven seconds on the 2000-meter course. The Quakers crossed first in a time of 5:40.3 to GW's 5:47.3.

"It was a great day to be out racing and beginning our season," Myhr, the Nicholas B. Paumgarten Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing said after the race. "It is very nice to get the Cup back for Penn and to have positive results to start the season."

In the second varsity eight race, Penn had two boats cross first before George Washington's boat completed the course. The Red and Blue's second eight claimed the race in a time of 5:35.8 with the third varsity crossing in 5:41.6. The Colonials rounded out the finishers in 5:52.6.

In the first frosh race, George Washington won a very tight battle in a time of 5:46.0. Penn was extremely close, finishing only eight-tenths of a second behind ina time of 5:46.8. The Quakers had the best of it in the second novice race, winning in 6:05.4 to GW's 6:14.8

The Quakers are back on the water April 9 with the Childs Cup on the line against Princeton and Columbia in Philly on the Schuylkill River.
