WORCHESTER, Mass. -
After a sluggish start to the day in the heats, Penn's heavyweight rowing team bounced back to improve in the finals, including a win by the Varsity Eight in the Third Final at the 2011 EARC Sprints.

The varsity improved by almost eight seconds from its heat race to win the Third Final, finishing in a time of 5:53.880, just above two seconds ahead of Northeastern's 5:56.133 and a hair over five seconds ahead of third-place George Washington's 6:03.059.

The second varsity finished fourth in its heat, advancing to the Petite Final where the Red and Blue again finished fourth but again showed marked improvement with 7.5 seconds cut from the morning time. In the Petite Final, the 2V crossed in 6:05.718, right behind Dartmouth's 6:05.057.

For the freshmen, it was another almost-eight-second improvement in the afternoon when after finishing sixth in their heat earlier, the novice crew took second in the Third Final in a time of 6:17.909  (compared to the 6:25.017 rowed in the morning). The 1F was right there with winner Holy Cross, coming in just over two-tenths behind the Crusaders in a very exciting race.
