PHILADELPHIA - One year removed from a dissappointing finish at the Head of the Charles which saw Penn's boat penalized all the way to a 35th-place finish in the Championship Eights, the Quakers are able to leave the 2011 edition of the Head of the Charles in a much better state of mind after a finish of 23rd out of 34 entries.
The Red and Blue finished in a time of 15:12.99, outracing annual rivals Georgetown (24th - 15:14.56), Columbia (30th - 15:35.91), and Dartmouth (32nd - 15:57.44). Harvard was the winner of the race, dethroning defending champion Washington with a winning time of 14:17.68. The Huskies finished third in the race, with US Rowing taking second.
In the championship Fours, Penn posted a finish of 14th place, crossing in a time of 17:21.79. The Red and Blue were 14th of 17 boats in the field, besting Camp Randall Rowing Club, Royal Air Force Rowing Club and Georgetown University. Wisconsin was the winner of the race, finishing first in a time of 16:12:69.
The Red and Blue are back home on the Schuylkill River next Saturday for the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.
