Heat Schedules
PHILADELPHIA - Penn's heavyweight rowing team is once again headed to Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. for the EARC Sprints this weekend, taking to the water on Sunday for heavily-contested regatta featuring some of the toughest crews in the country. Penn is ranked No. 17 this week in the USRowing Collegiate Poll, down one spot from last week's rankings. Last year, Penn finished 13th in the Varsity 8 field at Sprints, winning the Third Final by 2.5 seconds. All of Penn's boats which qualified for a Final at Sprints showed improvement in their times from the heats to the Final, but the Quakers will be looking to move up in those Finals this time around. The Varsity 8 will open up in Heat 2 on Sunday, rowing against No. 3 Brown, No. 7 Cornell, No. 11 Syracuse, No. 14 Columbia and Rutgers. The Red and Blue have only raced against Columbia this spring, finishing ahead of the Lions at the Childs Cup before being edged in the Blackwell Cup. If Penn can break the tie in its favor, the Quakers should move out of the Third Final and into the Petite Final. The Red and Blue have won EARC Sprints six times in its history, the last win coming in 1998 with a win two years prior in 1996. The event is largely dominated by Ivy League Schools with 10 of the last 12 championships claimed by the Ancient Eight, including defending champion Harvard. Only Wisconsin has come from outside the Ivy League to win in recent years (2002, 2008).
