PHILADELPHIA –
The rowing world will converge on the city of Boston this weekend for the annual Head of the Charles Regatta on the Charles River. The 48th installment of one of the premier rowing events in the world takes place both Saturday and Sunday, with Penn sending both an eight and a four to compete in the Championship events.

Over 300,000 spectators are expected to line the banks and bridges of the Charles River for the two-day event, including the men’s championship eights race on Sunday at 2:55 and the men’s championship four at 2:32. A home crew will enter as defending champion as Harvard won the 2011 HOTC in a time of 14:17.68. The Red and blue finished 23rd last year, besting annual rivals Georgetown, Columbia and Dartmouth in the process. In the fours, Penn was 14th.

Penn’s championship eights entry is schedule to launch 20th out of the 28 entered boats while the fours will be the 11th out of 20 boats to begin the race.

The Quakers are entering the Head of the Charles with momentum on their side after a second place finish in the Navy Day Regatta to begin the 2012-13 season. Penn was right with Navy last weekend on the Schuylkill River, continuing the success Penn found at the conclusion of the 2012 spring season. The Red and Blue hope to continue their upswing as they did at the Head of the Charles last October where Penn improved by 12 positions.
