Navy Day Regatta Schedule/Results

PHILADELPHIA - All three Penn rowing programs will open their 2013-14 seasons on Saturday at the Navy Day Regatta. The women, lightweights and heavyweights will launch their fall racing schedules from the familiar waters of the Schuylkill River.

Nicholas B. Paumgarten Head Coach of Heavyweight Rowing Greg Myhr enters his fifth season as skipper of the Quakers, looking to improve Penn's finish at Navy Day by that all-important final place. Last year, Penn was 2nd out of 19 boats in the heavyweight regatta, finishing 2.24 seconds behind Navy. Both Penn and Navy's A boats were 23 seconds ahead of the third-place crew, shwoing how dominant those two boats were. By the time Penn and Navy met in the Adams Cup in the spring, the Quakers had improved to the point where they were the better crew, taking second over the Midshipment by 1.7 seconds. Showing that the Quakers and Middies meet many times during a season, Navy had he edge at EARC Sprints, winning the Petite Final, while Penn was fifth.

The lightweights are coming off a strong 2013 spring season where they finished seventh at the EARC Sprints and earned their first trip to the IRA Regatta since 2010. At the national championships, the Red and Blue won the petite final and finished seventh in the nation - which matched their best finish under head coach Nick Baker, who enters his fifth season at the helm of the Quakers in 2013-14.

"I can't wait to get this season underway," said Penn's head coach of women's rowing, Mike Lane. "It is a very special fall so far, with the opening of our $2.5 million indoor training center and a group of athletes that has proven to be extremely hard workers and a lot of fun to be around. The Navy Day is always a great way to start our season, the competition is strong and it is on our home course."

Following the races, all three programs will host parents for a dinner and tour of the new indoor training facility in the Hutchinson Gymnasium. The dinner will take place in The Palestra.
