PHILADELPHIA – No. 4 Princeton had a comfortable advantage in the 104th Childs Cup on the Schuylkill River on Saturday, but No. 9 Penn closed off No. 14 Columbia for second, claiming second place by 0.8 seconds in a busy day of rowing.

Princeton’s winning time to claim its 47th Childs Cup was 5:33.9 over the 2000m course. The Quakers, who own 45 victories all-time in the series, were second in 5:41.2 while the Lions took third in 5:42.0.

The Red and Blue picked up two wins in the series of races on Saturday, claiming victory in the Second Varsity by 3.8 seconds over Princeton and 7.6 seconds over Columbia. Penn was first in 5:44.4 to pick up the win. The Quakers started the day with a win in the Fifth Varsity, crossing first in 6:12.1 to Princeton’s 6:18.5. Temple had a boat in the race, taking third in 6:19.0.

The Third Varsity was a two-boat race between Penn and Princeton, the Tigers winning in 5:52.9 to Penn’s 5:55.1. Columbia was a distant third in 6:11.5. The Tigers also claimed the Fourth Varsity in 6:00.4. Penn was second with a time of 6:04.8.

Penn is back in action April 19 in the Blackwell Cup against Yale and Columbia in Derby, Conn.
