PHILADELPHIA - No. 14 Penn heads to Ithaca and Lake Cayuga on Friday to row with No. 9 Cornell in the 59th installment of the Madeira Cup.

First rowed, the Madeira Cup is awarded to the winner of the Varsity Eight race while the James Wray Memorial Trophy is awarded to the overall winner of the day's races.

The Madeira Cup was donated in 1955 by the late Crawford Madeira, patron of Penn rowing, while the James Wray Memorial Trophy was donated in 1955 by members of the 1930 Cornell IRA varsity champions.

The Quakers have 36 wins in the Madeira Cup all-time, to 22 for the Big Red. Penn has not claimed the Madeira Cup since 2007 when the Quakers bested the Big Red by 1.2 seconds on the Schuylkill River. Penn's last win in Ithaca came in 2000.

Last weekend, Penn was 11th overall at EARC Sprints in the Varsity Eight, but did not row against the Big Red who reached the Grand Final.

In 2013, Cornell swept all five races, with a 3.6-second margin of victory in the Varsity Eight. The day's tightest finish came in the Open 4+ where the Big Red edged Penn by a slim 0.9 seconds.
