Total Performance Day Two: Men Swimming on Top

GAMBIER, Ohio – After 40 events, day two of the Total Performance Invitational hosted by Kenyon College comes to close with the University of Pennsylvania men swimming team surged ahead to capture first place. With one more day of swimming to go, the Quakers are on the right track to close out 2013 with a win.

The first men’s event, 200 free relay, was another pool and meet record broken this weekend. Breaking the record was the Red and Blue “A” team, after dropping three seconds and touching the wall first at 1:23.02. Seeded second, the “A” team – sophomore Eric Schultz, junior Dillon McHugh, junior Chris Lyons, senior Rhoads Worster – defeated the number one seed, Kenyon, by 1.57. The Penn “B” team – freshman Zach Fisher, freshman Jimmy Jameson, sophomore Kevin Intrieri, junior Sam Ruddy – placed seventh, dropping 0.73 to a time of 1:24.27.

Worster kept the speed at a high and broke the pool and meet record in the 200 fly with a time of 1:47.38. He entered the meet with a time of 1:51.67 and swam 1:47.57 for first place in prelims, dropping a total of 4.29 seconds.

For his second individual event win, Worster broke another pool and meet record in the 100 back. He dropped 1.31 from his entry time of 49.95 to 48.64, for the win. McHugh, who came in 0.31 behind Worster, dropped 2.18 and touched the wall at 48.95, for a second place finish.

Breaking yet another pool and meet record was the 400 medley relay “A” team – McHugh, Yu, Worster, Schultz – with a time of 3:13.43. The Red and Blue “A” team finished 5.41 seconds before the first seed, Kenyon “A” team, and shaved off an impressive 9.37 seconds from their entry time (3:22.80).

Penn also took a first place finish in the 100 breast, swam by sophomore Kyle Yu (54.49), and a first place tie in the 50 free, swam by Worster and Schultz (20.37).

Action resumes on Saturday morning with preliminary races beginning at 9:30 a.m. Diving sessions will begin at 1 p.m. and the championship and consolation finals will begin at 5:30 p.m.
