PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore defensive back Stu Helgeson was named Collegiate Sprint Football League Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, recognized for his superb 18-tackle game against Mansfield last Friday night.
Helgeson had 10 solo tackles and factored in on a share of eight more as the Quakers mauled the Mountaineers, 42-14, at Franklin Field. His efforts were instrumental in Penn overcoming a 14-7 deficit at halftime, as Helgeson was in on a pair of Mansfield turnovers which directly led to Penn points.
With the game tied, 14-14, early in the third quarter, Helgeson stepped into a Ben Pepper pass and picked it off at the Mansfield 32-yard line. On its first play from scrimmage, Penn connected in a touchdown to take a lead it would never relinquish.
The next series for the Mountaineers also ended in a turnover -- and subsequently led to a Penn touchdown. As Mansifeld marched toward the Quakers' red zone, Helgeson froced a fumble at the 25-yard line and then pounced on it deny the Mountaineers a chance to tie the game. 11 plays later, Penn found the end zone for the fourth time in the game for a 28-14 lead.
Helgeson and the Quakers look to move to 2-1 in CSFL play this weekend when they head to Cornell.
