James Sands
Position: Assistant Coach
James Sands enters his second season as an assistant coach with the varsity men's heavyweight rowing program at Penn, having joined Greg Myhr's staff after a stint at George Washington University from 2007-10 as the freshman heavyweight coach. Two of those seasons leading the Colonials' novice crews were spent as an assistant to Myhr, and together they led the Colonials to unprecedented success. In his first season at the helm of the freshmen in 2008, Sands led his crews to an 8-1 record in dual racing and a 14th-place overall finish at the Eastern Sprints. The following season, Sands' boats were 7-1 in duals and the varsity program he helped train took a ninth-place finish at Sprints.

In addition to his time with George Washington, Sands is a sought-after guest instructor at collegiate rowing camps, with appearances at Penn's Quaker Rowing Camps and Princeton's High Performance Rowing Camps. In both 2008 and 2009, Sands was a head coach at the US Rowing Olympic Men's Development Camp (Mid-Atlantic), coaching 32 rowers from across the country to appearances in the Grand Final of the US Rowing Club National Championships and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.

A 2007 graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Sands spent his first year with the Badgers as a coxswain on the freshman eight, coxing his crew to an undefeated record. The next three years, Sands moved into an oarsman seat, capturing several Midwest Championships titles as part of a nationally-ranked heavyweight squad. He graduated from Wisconsin with a degree in political science.
