PHILADELPHIA - Always the highlight of the Fall season, the University of Pennsylvania lightweights will compete in the 49th annual Head of the Charles this weekend on the Charles River. This year, the Quakers will be sending two boats to one of the world's most prestigious regattas, both racing on Sunday afternoon.
Last year at the Head of Charles, the Penn fours posted a top-10 finish. The Quakers finished in 18:24.91 to place ninth among the 16 boats. A short while later, the Quakers finished 15th in the eights - about a minute behind the top time.
In their fall debut last week, the lightweights won three races. The Quakers were first in two freshman races and were also victorious in the varsity fours. In the 23-boat freshman 8 race, the Quakers topped the field with a winning time of 12:07.98, and the freshman fours won with a finish of 13:22.96. In Penn's victory in the varsity fours, the Quakers finished in a time of 13:09.27 as the runaway winners by nearly a minute.A full recap of the 2013 Head of the Charles regatta can be found at PennAthletics.com following the conclusion of the day's events
