PHILADELPHIA - A year ago, the University of Pennsylvania lightweights claimed the Callow Cup back from Navy for the first time in 13 years. On Senior Day Saturday on the Schuylkill River, the Quakers will try to keep the cup in Philadelphia.

This marks the final home regatta for Penn seniors Sam Shaw and TJ Smith. The Callow Cup races begin at 11:50 a.m. with the varsity race slated for 1 p.m. Delaware will join Penn and the Midshipmen as a guest during the Callow Cup races. The Quakers will then take on M.I.T. in a dual starting at 4 p.m.

This will be the 59th Callow Cup race dating back to 1955. The cup was named in honor of Russell “Rusty” Callow, who coached at both Penn and the U.S. Naval Academy. Navy holds a slight edge in Cup wins at 31-27. Prior to last season, Penn's last victory over the Midshipmen was in 2000 on Lake Carnegie. That was the last of four straight Callow Cup wins for the Quakers which included their last victory on the Severn River in 1999.

Last year on the Severn River, there actually wasn't much suspense for the Callow Cup, but there was an incredible finish between Delaware and Penn. The Quakers and Blue Hens were neck-and-neck throughout the race, while the Midshipmen fell behind by open water. There was no photo at the end of the race and it was too close to call. The officials had to confer and declared Delaware the winner. The official winning time of 6:03.0, while the Quakers official finish was 6:03.3. Navy was third at 6:09.5.

Last week, Princeton retained the Wood-Hammond Cup with a first-place finish. They outpaced the Quakers and Hoyas to the finish line with a winning time of 6:18.57. Penn eventually pulled away from Georgetown, who joined the cup race as a guest, and finished in 6:28.38. The Hoyas crossed the finish line in 6:36.14.

A full recap of the Callow Cup races and dual with M.I.T. can be found at PennAthletics.com following the conclusion of the day's events.
