PHILADELPHIA - Saturday marks the first competition of the 2011 season for the University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight rowers as they play host to Delaware, Marietta and Williams on the Schuylkill River. The first lightweight event begins at 9:30 a.m. with the freshman race. The second varsity follow at 10 a.m., and the third varsity begin at 11:10 a.m. The varsity race is set for 10:40 a.m. A complete schedule and a list of Penn's tentative boatings can be found below. The team will also provide live updates via twitter at the link atop this release. Marietta and Delware each started their 2011 campaigns last week. Marietta topped Purdue by nearly 18 seconds and edged out Michigan by five-tenths of a second in Indiana, while Delware fell to Harvard. In this regatta a year ago, all three Penn varsity boats were victorious in Nick Baker's coaching debut. Each boat won decisively with the novice 8 finishing three seconds off the pace. On a sunny, but chilly morning on Penn's home course, the Quakers gained an early lead in the varsity 8 race. Penn pulled away with a final push as the grandstand approached and finished in a time of 5:46.5 to top Delaware's time of 5:50.3 and Marietta's finish of 6:04.9. A complete recap and results of the regatta will be available shortly after its conclusion on PennAthletics.com.
