PHILADELPHIA - In the first 2011 fall regatta for the Universtiy of Pennsylvania men's lightweights, the Quakers posted some early Saturday morning victories in the open 2 and the lightweight 4+. The junior varsity finished sixth, while the varsity placed fourth at the season opening Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
In the first race of the season, sophomores Zack Seigel and Eric Sezgen opened the year for the Red and Blue with a decisive victory in the Open 2. The duo was 11 seconds faster than their nearest competitors with a winning time of 14:54.32. Another Penn pair placed third as Hurst Nuckols and Mark Gannon finished in 15:07.04.
An hour later, the momentum continued into the Lightweight 4. The Quakers took the top two spots ahead of Navy. Sophomore Charles Shoener was the stroke for Penn's second victorious boat of the morning. The Quakers finished with a time of 14:06.07, a few seats ahead of another Penn boat (14:12.03).
In the final race of the day for Penn, the varsity was fourth among nine boats with a finish of 13:05.22. Navy took the top two spots, with the Midshipmen posting a winning time of 12:39.20, and Delaware was third. The other two Penn boats placed seventh and ninth, respectively.
In the junior varsity race, Penn was sixth out of 10 with a time of 12:54.25. It was almost a minute behind Navy's winning time.
The Quakers have two weeks to prepare for the premiere event of the fall - the Head of the Charles. The historic regatta is set for Sunday, Oct. 23 in Boston, Mass.
