Boat Dedication Program

PHILADELPHIA - Rowing season will officially be underway for the University of Pennsylvania lightweights Saturday. The Quakers will launch the 2012 campaign amid much fanfare with the "Fred W. Leonard" boat dedication in addition to races against Delaware and Saint Joseph's on the Schuylkill River.

Fans can follow Saturday's races on twitter or listen live at the links above. Or fans can listen to the races by calling 215-399-2864.

The first race of the 2012 season will feature the second freshman boat and the third varsity against Delaware at 10:20 a.m. The first freshman boat has its inaugural 2012 race at 10:40 a.m., followed by the second varsity (11:10 a.m.). The varsity's of Delaware and Penn square off at 11:40 a.m.

Later in the afternoon, the Quakers take on Saint Joseph's. The third varsity begins at 3:40 p.m. The freshmen and second varsity race is set for 4 p.m., and the two Philadelphia varsity boats will go head-to-head at 4:20 p.m.

The boat dedication will take place between the Delaware and Saint Joseph's races. The "Fred W. Leonard" was donated in honor of the former Penn head coach. Leonard spent 27 seasons at the University of Pennsylvania. During that time, the Quakers recorded four-straight undefeated cup race seasons (1975-78) and claimed the 1976 Varsity Eight EARC championship.

In their last time out, Penn's varsity eight finished ninth among 27 boats at the Princeton Chase in the final weekend of October. In that same regatta, the freshman placed 14th out of 40.

Last year in the 2011 season opener, the Quakers posted wins in each freshman race and the varsity placed second to Delaware on the Schuylkill River. In the varsity race, the Quakers pulled in front at the start, but the Blue Hens caught the Red and Blue and held off the Penn varsity for a four-second victory. Delaware's winning time was 6:10.7 and the Quakers finished in 6:14.6. Both freshman boats won in their collegiate debuts. The first freshman boat jumped out to an early lead and held a healthy lead throughout to collect the open-water win in their first collegiate regatta. Penn finished the course in 6:16.6 with Delaware posting a finish of 6:20.8.

A complete recap and results of the regatta will be available shortly after its conclusion on PennAthletics.com as well as some highlights from the Fred W. Leonard boat dedication.
