PHILADELPHIA - Though the University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight rowing team was unable to seize the Matthews-Leonard Cup, the Quakers bounced back to sweep Mercyhurst in the afternoon dual Saturday on the Schuylkill River.
In Penn's first regatta on its home course this year, the freshmen topped both Cornell and Harvard for their second win in as many weeks. The Red and Blue won by a length while the Crimson and Big Red battled for second place. The Penn boat finished in 5:50.6 and after a photo finish, Cornell edged Harvard, 5:52.9 to 5:53.2.
In the battle for the Matthews-Leonard Cup, the Quakers got off to a strong start. But so did the defending national champion, Harvard, and perennial powerhouse, Cornell. Eventually, Harvard edged out the Big Red by two seconds with a winning time of 5:52.0 and Penn was third at 6:05.4.
There was a collision at the start of the second freshman race when the Crimson steered into the Penn boat, but after a restart, Harvard topped the Quakers by seven seconds. Penn's second and third varsity boats placed third to the Big Red and Crimson.
However, the Quakers bounced back with a sweep of all three races over Mercyhurst in the afternoon dual. In the closest race with the Lakers, the varsity pulled out in front and held on for the win with a time of 6:06.3. Mercyhurst finished in 6:09.9. The freshman boat won for the second time on Saturday with a time of 6:23.3 in the second varsity race. Also in that race, Penn's second varsity was also easily ahead of the Lakers with an 11-second cushion and finish of 6:34.4. The third varsity led from start-to-finish and cruised to a seven-second open water win at 6:41.9.
Next week, the Quakers return to the Schuylkill River for the Dodge Cup race with Yale and Columbia on Saturday morning.
