PHILADELPHIA - Once again, the freshman boat came out on top for the University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight rowing team to remain undefeated this spring. Alson on Saturday on the Schuylkill RIver, the Quakers varsity finished third in the race for the Dodge Cup behind Yale and Columbia.
In consecutive weeks, the Penn freshman boat has topped Cornell, Harvard and Yale. The Bulldogs were the latest to watch the Quakers cross the finish line first. Penn maintained a comfortable edge down the stretch and topped Yale by a little more than five seconds with a winning time of 5:48.3.
In the Dodge Cup race, the Bulldogs retained the cup with a time of 5:30.5. Columbia and Penn each fell slightly behind Yale and were in a battle for second-place. Columbia eventually held off the Quakers with a finish of 5:36.4, while Penn came across at 5:39.9.
It was a similar result in the second varsity race as Yale came out on top with a winning mark of 5:45.8, followed by the Lions and Quakers. In the third varsity, Columbia bested the Red and Blue by nine seconds with a time of 6:04.8. Yale also topped Penn in the fours with an eight-second victory.
Next Saturday will mark Senior Day for the Quakers on the Schuylkill River. Penn hosts Princeton in the race for the Wood-Hammond Cup. Georgetown will also join the regatta as a guest.
