PHILADELPHIA– For the
third straight week, the University
of Pennsylvania football
team is represented among the Ivy League Player of the Week honorees. In fact,
two Quakers were rewarded this week after Penn’s 15-10 win over Columbia on Saturday.
Freshman Matt Hamscher is the Ivy League Rookie of the Week, while junior Kyle
Olson won Special Teams Player of the Week honors as announced by the league
office on Monday.
Hamscher
guided the Quakers into first place in the Ivy League, finishing the game with
67 yards on 17 carries and one reception for six yards. The Whitehall, Pa.,
native was forced to carry the ball more than any other Penn running back for
the second straight week. He took over the load in the fourth quarter with
eight carries for 31 yards as Penn was able to hold the ball for more than 10
minutes in the final quarter of play. Hamscher also led the Quakers in
all-purpose yards for the second straight game.
Olson was a
big reason Columbia
stayed off the scoreboard in Penn’s victory. Of his nine punts, six were downed
inside the 20-yard line with one being downed at the two-yard line. None went
for a touchback. Against the best punt returner in the Ivy League, the Los Alamitos, Calif.,
native managed to keep sophomore Mike Stephens to 11 yards on two returns. Olson
also played his natural position of quarterback in the third quarter, going
3-for-8 for 32 yards.
This is the
third consecutive week a Penn player has won the Ivy League’s Special Teams
Player of the Week award. Sophomore kicker Andrew Samson won the distinction on
Oct. 6, while junior Chris Wynn was the recipient last week.
Penn plays
its first Ivy League game on the road game Saturday at Yale. Kickoff at the
Yale Bowl is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. and the game will be televised to a
national audience on the YES Network.
