PHILADELPHIA - The Penn men’s basketball team handed out its end-of-season awards Sunday, April 26 at the team banquet, which was held at the Inn at Penn.

Sophomore Tyler Bernardini was named winner of the Arthur Kiefaber MVP Award. Despite missing three games this season, Bernardini led the Quakers in scoring (13.7 ppg) three-point baskets (39). He also averaged 4.0 rebounds while also dishing off 49 assists and collecting 34 steals. Bernardini began the season by matching a career high with 26 points against eventual NCAA champion North Carolina, led the Quakers in scoring a team-high 10 games, and also led Penn with 18 double-figure scoring games and four games with 20 or more points. He also collected his first two collegiate double-doubles this season. Through two seasons, Bernardini has 705 points.

Senior Kevin Egee received the Bus McDonald Award as the program’s most inspirational player. Egee played in all 28 games for Penn this season, averaging 7.5 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. He finished among the Ivy League leaders in 3-point field goal percentage and had nine double-figure scoring games on the season. Also an Academic All-Ivy pick, Egee may have had the highlight of Penn’s season when he drained a 30-foot jump shot at the buzzer to beat Columbia in the second-to-last game of the season. Egee finished his career playing in 103 games, scoring 502 points, and collecting 169 rebounds. He also had 81 career assists and 51 steals.

Freshman Zack Rosen received the G. Fred DiBona Award as the program’s outstanding newcomer. Also the Philadelphia Big 5 Rookie of the Year, Rosen had a stellar freshman campaign, leading the Ivy League in assists per game (5.0) and assist/turnover ratio (1.99). His 139 assists on the season put him eighth on Penn’s single-season list. Rosen also finished second in the Ivy League in free-throw percentage and third with 1.5 steals per contest. He appeared in all 28 games for the Quakers, and led the team with 27 starts, averaging 8.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Rosen had 13 double-figure scoring games on the season, and dished out at least six assists in 11 different contests.

Another freshman, Rob Belcore, was honored twice on Sunday, collecting the Best Defensive Player and Jack Saxenmeyer Award (most improved player). Belcore finished the season with 14 starts in 26 appearances, averaging 4.3 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. In Ivy play, his numbers moved up to 5.0 points and 2.2 boards. Belcore scored in double figures five times, and had season highs of seven rebounds (Jan. 20 at Harvard) and seven assists (Dec. 30 vs. Campbell).

Penn finished the 2008-09 season with a 10-18 record and went 6-8 in the Ivy League.
