ITHACA – Penn is in the win column in the Ivy League thanks in large part to a virtuoso performance from freshman Chris McNulty.

The rookie hurler went the distance in game two against the Big Red, allowing three runs on just six hits while striking out seven to lead Penn to a 6-3 win. Penn did a nice job rebounding from a 12-5 loss to start the day.

The Quakers are now 11-17 this season and 1-9 in the Ivy League. Cornell is 6-17 and 3-7 in the Ancient Eight.

McNulty threw 123 pitches to earn his first career win. Staked to a 6-0 lead after three innings, he settled in and avoided any major damage from the Big Red. After allowing two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth, McNulty worked around two errors from Will Davis at first base in the final three innings to squash any potential rally.

Davis rebounded in the seventh to end the inning with a nice unassisted play at first. Then, in the ninth, McNulty induced a 4-6-3 double play for two outs with runners on first and third and ended the game by getting Jerry Vitiello to fly out to center.

Penn jumped all over Cornell in the first inning, scoring four runs. The first four batters reached base, with a Dan Williams single scoring Adrian Lorenzo. Jeremy Maas followed with a double of his own to score Williams and Derek Vigoa. William Gordon plated Maas with a single two batters later.

Vigoa belted his second homer of the season in the second inning, a solo shot to left to make the lead 5-0. Mike Mariano drove in the sixth run with a sac fly to center in the third.

The win snapped a nine-game Ivy losing streak for Penn that was extended in the opener via a 12-5 Cornell win. Todd Roth took the loss, allowing 12 runs on 15 hits over six innings. Penn had issues in the field, committing four errors which led to five unearned runs for the Big Red. Cornell scored eight in the first inning and never looked back. A silver lining is that Roth pitched the whole game, which coupled with McNulty’s complete game leaves the bullpen rested and fresh for tomorrow’s twinbill with Cornell that starts at noon.
