Penn 12, La Salle 9 Box Score 

PHILADELPHIA – Penn and La Salle traded runs in the first two innings of a Big Five game at Hank DeVincent Stadium, but the two teams settled in to a pitching dual for the next five innings. With the score 9-8 in favor of the Explorers in the eighth inning, the Quakers put up a four-spot to take a lead they would never relinquish.

Penn scored the tying and go-ahead runs on wild pitches and added two more on a two-run single from William Gordon. The hit was Gordon’s third of the day and brought his RBI total for the game to four.

Gordon’s day wasn’t done. He had already tossed one scoreless inning in the seventh and added a second in the bottom of the eighth for his first win of the season. Freshman Chris McNulty pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first collegiate save.

Penn had an early 7-3 lead in the second thanks to a Derek Vigoa two-run homer that cleared the high fence in left. Steve Gable and Gordon also had RBIs in the inning.

Penn allowed La Salle to get back in the game and take the lead with five runs in the bottom of the second. Paul Cusick hit three batters in the inning to allow singles from Explorer hitters to drive in the runs.

From that point on, the Penn pitching staff shut down the La Salle bats, allowing only one more run over the final seven innings on four hits.

Penn is now 3-0 in Big Five games and can stake claim to city pride amongst Philadelphia schools.

The Quakers are back in action on Saturday against Princeton at noon at Meiklejohn Stadium.
