Directions to Cooper River

PHILADELPHIA - The Penn women’s rowing team is looking to make a splash this weekend, as the EAWRC Sprints will be contested on the Cooper River in Camden County, N.J.

The course will later host the NCAA Championships, and third-year head coach Mike Lane is hoping this is the first of two trips the Quakers will have to make across the Delaware River in the next few weeks.

“This spring we have tasted success, but we have also fallen short a few times,” he said. “The nice thing about this sport is that, on Sunday, every crew arrives at the start line equal. All of our crews are in position to be successful on Sunday.

“The last three weeks have allowed us to make some changes, but also continue to build on our successes.”

Penn’s varsity boat will certainly have its hands full trying to get to the grand final for the second year in a row. The Quakers’ heat, slated for 9 a.m., features seventh-ranked Princeton and 15th-ranked Harvard. It is the only heat of the three that features two ranked teams. Cornell, who Penn beat by five seconds on the Schuylkill River in April, is also in Penn’s six-boat heat.

Last year, of course, the varsity eight reached the final for the first time since 1991 and had its best finish (fifth) since 1982. The novice 4 finished second and the varsity 4 placed fourth, and as a team Penn scored 43 points to take sixth in the Willing Point Trophy race. Penn’s most recent Sprints title came in 2007, in the second novice 8.

“Our successes over the past few years are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our athletes,” said Lane. “I have faith that on race day our athletes will leave everything on the water.”
