Pool Division Draws
Molloy Division Draws
AMHERST, Mass. - Both
men's squash players are still alive after the Friday session of the CSA
Individual Championships. Thomas Mattsson took a loss in the Round of 32, but
stayed alive with a default win in the consolations of the Pool Division. Dan Greenberg advanced to
the Round of 16 after posting a win in his only match of the day during the
Round of 32 in the Molloy Division.
Playing in the top-tier, 12th-seeded Mattsson jumped out in
front of No. 21 Richard Dodd early. Penn's senior captain took the first two
games by the identical final scores of 11-8 and looked to be well on his way to
victory. However, he could never capture that elusive third game. He would drop
a hard-fought 11-9 game in the third and Dodd would use that momentum in the
final two games, taking those 11-7 and 11-1.
With the loss, Mattsson dropped down into the consolation bracket,
but received a default win after No. 5 Christopher Hanson of Dartmouth was
injured in his loss. With the default win, Mattsson moves into the
first round consolation quarterfinals where he will face Thomas Spettigue of
Cornell at 12:20 tomorrow. Spettigue played No. 3 for the Big Red this season
and defeated Daniel Judd in straight games during the regular season meeting.
With a win Saturday afternoon, Mattsson will advance to the first round
consolation semifinals where he would meet the winner of Gabriel De Melo
(Franklin & Marshall) and Adam Perkiomaki (Rochester). That match would
take place tomorrow at 6:40 p.m.
Greenberg received a bye in the Round of 64 of the
Molloy Division. With a bye into the Round of 32, Greenberg moved into the
Round of 16 with a four-game win in his opening match. Penn's junior opened up his
match with a hard-fought game that went to extra points, 13-11. He would then
go up 2-0 with an 11-4 win in the second. After dropping the third, 11-7,
Greenberg would not let his opponent come any closer as he clinched his win
with an 11-8 fourth game victory.
In his Round of 16 matchup tomorrow, he will face Andrew
McGuinness, younger brother of Penn's Trevor McGuinness. The younger McGuinness played
at No. 1 for Navy this season and was beaten by Mattsson earlier in the year.
Greenberg and McGuinness will play their match at 12:20 p.m. tomorrow.
A win over McGuinness would put Greenberg in the quarterfinals against either Christopher Jung (Dartmouth) or second-seeded Clay
Blackiston (Princeton). That quarterfinal match would take place at 5:50 p.m.
tomorrow night.
