PHILADELPHIA - Senior Brendan McHugh will take part in the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships this Thursday-Saturday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Seattle, Washington.
McHugh has qualified for three events in the Championships: the 100 Breaststroke, 200 Breaststroke and 200 IM. His times for the 100 Breaststroke (53.04) and 200 Breaststroke (1:56.16), both achieved at the Total Performance Invitational at Kenyon College last December, currently rank 13th and 19th in the nation. In addition, McHugh qualified for the 200 IM with a 'B' cut time of 1:48.11 that ranks 59th in the nation. Both times in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke are currently Penn records.
The Sicklerville, N.J. native is the first Quaker since Jeff Brown in 1996 to qualify for the NCAA Championships. In his junior year, Brown qualified for the 200 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle competitions, and his time in the 500 Free earned him 22nd place at the NCAA Championships.
The 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships are co-hosted by the Seattle Sports Commission and Seattle University. Preliminary heats and finals for the 200 IM are on March 22, the 100 Breaststroke is on March 23, and the 200 Breaststroke will follow on March 24.
