Complete Day One Results

NCAA Program

Columbus, Ohio -
The women's fencing team sits in a tie for seventh place after one day of competition at the NCAA Championships at Ohio State University. Freshmen Luona Wang and Sarah Parmacek have vaulted Penn to the top in women's foil, as their 20 combined victories are unmatched by any other school competing in that weapon.

Wang was stunning in her national debut, collecting 12 wins in 14 bouts to stand in second place entering Friday. Only the leader, Mona Shaito of Ohio State, did better on Thursday. Shaito is 14-0 but has yet to face either Wang or Parmacek. For her part, Parmacek performed admirably in her first taste of the NCAA stage as well. An 8-6 record on Day One leaves her only two wins out of the top four and keeps the door open for All-America status.

The other Penn qualifiers, Dominika Franciszkowicz and Amrit Bhinder, are both in the top half of their weapons also. Franciszkowicz had eight wins on Thursday with an indicator of +10 to take 10th place in sabre, while Bhinder has seven wins and is in 12th place after the first afternoon.

With 14 bouts in the books, the Quakers will return to the strips tomorrow to complete the round-robin. After every fencer has faced off with every other qualifier in their weapon, the top four will advance to the semifinals for a 15-touch bout, followed by the finals between the two survivors of the semis. ESPN3 will have coverage of the semifinals and finals beginning at 1:45 p.m, and live stats will be available all day here.
