Seattle, Wash. - Brendan McHugh opened his 2012 NCAA Championships on Thursday with a 39th place showing in the 200 IM, an improvement of over half a second from the time that qualified him to compete in the event.
Seeded 59th entering the 200 IM with a time of 1:48.11 from earlier this season, the Quaker standout used a blistering final 50 of 25.80 in the freestyle to jump past several other swimmers - this year's Ivy champion Jonathan Christensen of Princeton included - to grab the Top 40 finish. The finals of the 200 IM will take place later this evening.
McHugh will now move into his specialty events over the course of the next two days, competing tomorrow in the 100 Breaststroke before closing the Championships with the 200 Breaststroke on Saturday.
