PHILADELPHIA - Another tough matchup lies ahead for the University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight rowing team as they get set to take on rival Princeton for the Wood-Hammond Cup on Saturday on Lake Carnegie.
Penn will compete in four races on Saturday. The third varsity will start the day at 10 a.m., and will be followed by the freshman race at 10:20 a.m. The second varsity boats will start at 10:40 a.m., while the Wood-Hammond Cup will be up for grabs at 11 a.m.
If you are unable to cheer on the
lightweights in person, you can listen to the Princeton broadcast of the
races by phone at 609-436-4171 or at this link: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/princeton.portal#.
This will be the 67th Wood-Hammond Cup race dating back to 1941. Princeton has brought home the cup on 55 occasions, including each of the
last six years. Penn has won this race 11 times with the last Quakers
victory coming in 2005 on the Schuylkill River. Georgetown has now competed as a guest in this race in six of the last eight years.
Last year, Penn placed second in the
Wood-Hammond Cup race on the Schuylkill River. The Quakers
topped No. 6 Georgetown, but No. 1 Princeton took home the trophy. The trio of teams competed through a light wind and
rain. No. 10 Penn was unable to keep pace with the Tigers, but
eventually grew a comfortable advantage over Georgetown as the Quakers
finished in 5:48.4. The guest Hoyas finished the
course in 5:51.6 and Princeton won with a time of
5:43.5.
Last week, No. 9 Penn finished third to No. 2 Yale and No. 7 Columbia in the Dodge Cup. The Bulldogs led wire-to-wire and the Quakers suffered
from a slow start that they were not able to recover from. Yale won with a time of 5:57.3 - two seconds ahead of the host Lions.
Penn finished at 6:12.2. However, the third varsity helped the Quakers finish on a high note. Penn fell behind early, but posted a
come-from-behind victory with a winning time of 6:41.1. Yale finished in
6:45.6.
