Penn Lightweights on Twitter

PRINCETON, N.J. - It was a gorgeous day for rowing Saturday on Lake Carnegie, but the University of Pennsylvania men's lightweights weren't able to find similar results as Princeton claimed the Wood-Hammond Cup.

In the varsity 8 cup race, Georgetown -- a guest at the regatta -- led wire-to-wire and finished just 0.28 seconds off of Princeton's 14-year-old course record. The Hoyas finished in 5:38.7. Penn and Princeton were in a tight battle for the Wood-Hammond Cup for the first 1,250 meters. But it was the Tigers who had the final push on their home course to claime the cup with a time of 5:41.2. Penn finished in 5:49.4.

In the first race of the day, Princeton's second freshman boat topped the Quakers' third varsity by 16 seconds. That was followed by the freshman 8 where the host Tigers were once again the first to cross the finish line in 5:55.8. The Quakers were second at 6:02.5, which was about eight seconds better than the Hoyas. In the race preceding the Wood-Hammond Cup matchup, the Tigers boasted the top second varsity boat with a time of 5:52.4. Georgetown was second, and about six seconds ahead of the Quakers, with a time of 5:57.0.

Next weekend, the Quakers finish the cup season with in a matchup with Navy. The race for the Callow Cup will also serve as Senior Day for the Quakers on the Schuylkill River. Penn will also face M.I.T. in a dual later in the afternoon.
