PHILADELPHIA - With a spot in the IRA Championships looming next week, No. 14 Penn has two more races to serve as preparation this weekend - and both are challenging regattas against teams Penn will need to knock off to contend at IRAs next weekend.
Up first is the 56th installment of the Madeira Cup with No. 13 Cornell on Cayuga Lake on Friday. The Quakers hold a 35-20 edge in the all-time Madeira Cup standings, but are winless since 2007. The Red and Blue last claimed victory on Cayuga Lake back in 2000 via a 2.5-second win. Penn and Cornell were linked heavily two weeks ago at the EARC Sprints, meeting in both the heats and in the Petite Final. Cornell had the edge in both races, but the Quakers closed from a 4.4-second deficit in the morning to missing out on finishing ahead of Cornell in the Petite Final by just .492 seconds.
On Saturday, the Quakers return to the Schuylkill River one more time this season for a regatta with No. 6 Wisconsin. Last year, Wisconsin won the race by 6.1 seconds over the Quakers on the Schuylkill.
