PHILADELPHIA - The Penn women's rowing program added to its list of highlights during the 2011-12 academic year, the sixth under head coach Mike Lane.
Penn enjoyed a fine fall season. The Novice 8, in particular, enjoyed a productive and bountiful fall. They took first place at three the four events in which they competed -- the Navy Day Regatta, the Head of the Schuylkill, and the Rivanna Romp hosted by Virginia.
Penn started the fall with the Navy Day Regatta, and once again this year the championships were plentiful from that event as the Quakers took four titles: Second Varsity 8, Varsity 4, Novice 8, and Novice 4. In the Varsity 8, Penn finished second to Navy.
Next up was the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta, where the Quakers finished 13th out of 37 boats in the Women's Championship 8 field.
One week later, Penn's Novice 8 took the title at the Head of the Schuylkill, while the Novice 4 was fourth before weather cancelled racing for the day. A day after that, in beautiful weather, the Quakers' varsity 8 placed seventh out of 49 boats, the best finish in Coach Lane's tenure at Penn.
The Novice 8 win was the highlight at the Rivanna Romp.
The spring was highlighted by Penn's winning every NCAA boat -- first varsity 8, second varsity 8, and varsity 4 -- as well as the third varsity at the Orange Challenge Cup, defeating host Syracuse as well as Northeastern. The varsity 8 win was the Quakers' second in a row, the first time Penn has won the race consecutively since 1988-89.
Penn added a new event to the spring schedule this year, competing at the UVA Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. The varsity 8 went 3-2 in three races down there, defeating No. 19 Minnesota and San Diego.
Penn also competed in the inaugural Ivy League Women's Rowing Championships, which took place in conjunction with the EAWRC Sprints on the Cooper River in mid-May. The Quakers' best finish at that event came in the varsity 4B, a fifth-place finish, while the varsity 4A and the third varsity 8 also made the grand final.
Coach Lane recently sat down with the Penn Sports Network to recap the 2011-12 season. That video can be seen at the top of this article.
