200m Semifinal Results

OMAHA -
Brendan McHigh had the meet of his life.

After swimming his way to a second semifinals appearance at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials there is no doubt that McHugh put things together at the right time.

Seeded 107th in the men's 200m breaststroke, McHugh blew away the field in his heat on Thursday afternoon to win convincingly in a time of 2:13.87 - well below his qualifying time of 2:20.02. In the night session, McHugh swam the fastest first 50m of the 16 swimmers in the semifinals, but was caught midway through his semi to finish in 8th place in a time of 2:14.32. Overall, he finished in 16th place in the event.

McHugh's time in the prelims was fastest through those first four heats -- and fastest through the first 11 as swimmer after swimmer who were expected to gow as low as McHugh did were unable to do so. As the top three heats began, McHugh needed to wait out some of the best in the world to reach the night session and he did with a 16th-place overall finish in the preliminary swim.

McHugh needed every tick of his 2:13.87 to advance -- 17th-place Nicolas Fink clocked in at 2:13.89 to just miss advancing. McHugh was strong early -- his opening 50m (29.61) was second fastest among the 132 entrants and his opening 100m (103.18) was third quckest.

On Monday, McHugh was 9th-fastest in the prelims of the 100m breaststroke to reach the semifinals in that event -- the first Penn trip to the semis at an Olympic Trials in program history. McHugh ended up 10th after the semis, two spots out of the final.
