Palm Beach Post recap
PHILADELPHIA - Austin Powell, a rising sophomore and a member of the University of Pennsylvania's men's golf team, captured the Palm Beach County Amateur title in early August.
Powell eagled the 17th hole during the third and final round, and that proved to be enough as he finished at 9-under-par 207 for the 54-hole event. That allowed him to defeat Matt Ceravolo and Gary Nicklaus -- son of the legendary Jack Nicklaus -- by a stroke.
Powell enjoyed a stellar freshman year with the Quakers, highlighted in late April when he was in the lineup and helped Penn win the team title at the Ivy League Championships in Galloway, N.J. Powell later finished third among Penn's five players at the NCAA South Central Regional in Bowling Green, Ky.
Powell enjoyed an individual win at the Quaker Invitational earlier in the spring, shooting 76-71--147 on the Trump National Philadelphia course in Pine Hill, N.J. For the season, Powell had a 75.8 stroke average in 23 tournament rounds, with his low rounds of 71 coming at the Quaker Invite as well as the season-opening Maryland Intercollegiate.
Penn returns four players from the lineup that won the Ivy League title last year -- Powell, P.J. Fielding, Max Marsico and Colin St. Maxens -- with several other players back who will push for spots.
